T-shirt design metal band
Merchandise Terragogue

Over:

I was very happy when I heard that my old internship company had this solo assignment available. Not only do I really appreciate metal, I always wanted to design a t-shirt. That's just one of the things on a designer's bucket list. This assignment also offered an opportunity to work on paper. Although in the meantime I have learned how flexible and convenient it is to work digitally, I have always preferred to draw on paper. The beginner metal band Terragogue (see logo on the right) was also an advocate of that. During the briefing they showed pictures of Jeroen Bosch as inspiration. That style simply cannot be created digitally. After discussing this with the supervisors, they gave traditional drawing a GO!

For the first sketch I made a terracotta monster, derived from the name Terragogue which means earth monster. This turned out to be too prude, and the band wanted to see something animal-like with meat. It was also off-putting that the head of the monster was not visible, which took away much of the tension. The band and I sat together and we brainstormed about how the monster could be designed better. The result is a spiky earth monster with a crooked jaw, body eyes and huge claws. Super metal!
